The top holdings of many ESG funds may be surprisingly familiar. ESG funds also tend to be more heavily invested in technology stocks because the sector is one of the "cleaner" industries, according to former VettaFi financial futurist Dave Nadig. But Noack considers the idea that ESG funds only invest in clean, sustainable sectors as misleading. Global ESG funds saw their first net quarterly outflows on record in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to Morningstar. However, Nadig points out while financial advisors may have pulled back from recommending ESG funds to clients, investor interest hasn't gone anywhere.

The Scope 3 disclosure requirements have drawn strong criticism from many corporations, who claim the regulations are too burdensome. The climate disclosure rule was first proposed in March 2022. Since Congress has not passed major climate legislation for years, opponents of the SEC's climate rule will likely sue the SEC and cite West Virginia v. EPA, again arguing that Congress has not granted specific authority for the SEC to act on climate change. The disclosures required from the proposed SEC rule may shuffle the deck on companies that are considered "green" or "not so green." Arne Noack, manager of the Xtrackers S&P 500 ESG ETF and DWS Head of Systemic Investment Solutions for the Americas, will be the guest on ETF Edge at 1:10 p.m.

A major ETF provider hopes the grass will get greener for climate-related funds in the United States. Asset manager DWS launched the Xtrackers MSCI USA Climate Action Equity ETF [USCA] this month. To find the companies that yield the best results, Noack notes the MSCI index measures emissions levels of each company and ranks them within each sector. It classifies a company's greenhouse gas emissions into three categories: Scopes 1 and 2 account for emissions produced from a company's owned and controlled sources. Scope 3 accounts for those produced by all activities from its unowned and uncontrolled sources, like customers and suppliers.
A January Ifo survey showed improved sentiment among German businesses. Tobias Schwarz | Afp | Getty ImagesGerman business sentiment improved in January, according to a widely watched survey from the Munich-based Ifo Institute — in a prospective sign that Europe's largest economy could swerve a recession. Ifo's Business Climate Index rose to 90.2 points from 88.6 points previously on "considerably less pessimistic expectations," a release said. "The expectation was that there might be a recession in the fourth quarter of '22 and the first quarter of '23. Fuest said a number of factors were improving within German manufacturing, including energy prices and supply chain bottlenecks easing.
"What ESG investing is, is very simply put, an incorporation of publicly available data into investment processes," Noack said. Small but controversialSome investors like Noack have pointed out that debates surrounding ESG investing may be getting more attention than they deserve. However, grouping all ESG funds into one classification is too wide-ranging, Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, said in the same segment. The SPDR S&P 500 ESG ETF (EFIV) tracks an index designed to select S&P 500 companies meeting ESG criteria, while the Xtrackers MSCI USA ESG Leaders Equity ETF (USSG) corresponds to the performance of its underlying index. The Xtrackers S&P 500 ESG ETF (SNPE) , for instance, doesn't target the 25% worst S&P 500 companies from an ESG perspective of each industry group.
